Advances in Bromine Speciation by HPLC/ICP-MS 02 Sep 2009: This work has demonstrated a rapid, robust method for separating and measuring bromide and bromate in drinking waters. The separations are accomplished in less than three minutes and proved to be repeatable from injection to injection and over several days. PerkinElmer, Inc.

Analysis of Fuel Oxygenates by U.S. EPA Method 8260B Using Headspace Trap with GC/MS 02 Sep 2009: This field application report describes the use of a PerkinElmer® TurboMatrix™ HS-110 Trap and Clarus® 500 GC/MS optimized for low-level determination of fuel oxygenates by U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Method 8260B. PerkinElmer, Inc.

The Analysis of Baby Foods and Juices for Metals to Protect a Sensitive Population 15 Jul 2009: Babies and small children are an especially sensitive population to exposure to environmental contaminants. This work will describe measurements of a variety of toxic metals at low concentrations in fruit juices and fruit purees. Sample preparation and the effect on detection limits will be described. PerkinElmer, Inc.

The Determination of Metals in Dietary Supplements 15 Jul 2009: Metals can be found due to their inclusion in vitamin structures such as vitamin B-12 and minerals, such as selenium. They may also be added as a contaminant through natural products or in the manufacturing process. Analysis challenges include measurement at low concentrations in a variety of matrices. In this note we used inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry to measure a variety of elements generally considered to be hazardous to human health at low to medium concentrations. PerkinElmer, Inc.

The Determination of Iodine in Food with the ELAN DRC-e ICP-MS 15 Jul 2009: The determination of iodine in food has always been difficult due to the low concentrations (mg/kg), difficult sample preparation and the volatility of iodine. This work demonstrates the ability of the ELAN® ICP-MS to measure iodine in food samples. PerkinElmer, Inc.

Screening for Melamine Adulteration in Protein-Based Foods by GC/MS 15 Jul 2009: Melamine is a nitrogen-rich industrial chemical with many different uses; one of the most common is in the manufacturing of melamine resin, a very durable polymer. This paper presents a robust, efficient and definitive analysis of melamine and related analogues. The sample preparation, including extraction and derivatization, are discussed in addition to the optimized gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) method. PerkinElmer, Inc.

The Application of GC/MS to the Analysis of Pesticides in Foodstuffs 15 Jul 2009: Pesticide contamination of foodstuffs has become a worldwide concern, prompting various levels of regulation and monitoring. This paper outlines a GC/MS method, allowing for the quantification of low-level pesticides with SIM, while simultaneously performing quantification of higher concentrations using full-scan acquisition (SIFI™ - single ion and full ion scanning). PerkinElmer, Inc.

The Determination of 2,4,6-Trichloroanisole in Wine using Headspace Trap with GC/MS 15 Jul 2009: 2,4,6-trichloroanisole (TCA) is found in the cork used to seal glass wine bottles. The determination of TCA in wine is necessary due to the extremely low level of sensory perception for this compound. Wineries require a fast, reliable technique that can produce accurate and precise results for TCA analysis. PerkinElmer, Inc.

Applying the Technology of the TurboMatrix 650 ATD to the Analysis of Liquid Accelerants in Arson Investigation 15 Jun 2009: As with all forensic analyses, the data generated in arson investigation must be legally defensible, creating the need for duplicate analyses and sample archival. This study discusses how the use of solvents for sample preparation can be eliminated and how sample recollection can be implemented on the TurboMatrix™ 650 ATD, using thermal extraction combined with dynamic headspace and automated thermal desorption. PerkinElmer, Inc.
